NASA has dispatched two of their specialized research jets to study the Sun during the total solar eclipse that will occur in April 2024. The two aircraft, a Lockheed U-2S and an Er-2, will fly over the Pacific Ocean to capture images of the Sun’s outer atmosphere, known as the corona.
The researchers plan to observe the eclipse from an altitude of 70,000 feet, above most of the Earth’s atmosphere. This rare opportunity will allow them to study the magnetic fields and plasma activity of the Sun in unprecedented detail.
The total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, will be visible from Mexico to Canada and will last for over four minutes in some locations. Scientists hope that the data collected during this event will help them better understand the Sun’s behavior and improve space weather forecasts.
This mission is part of NASA’s ongoing efforts to study our closest star and its impact on Earth’s climate and technology. The researchers are excited about the potential discoveries that could be made during this unique event.
