Seattle Poetry in Place is a groundbreaking project that connects poetry with various locations around the city, turning public spaces into literary sites.
Led by the Seattle Office of Arts and Culture, the project features local poets who have been commissioned to write poems inspired by specific places in Seattle. These poems are then displayed in those locations for the public to enjoy.
One such poet is Quenton Baker, whose poem “Zanj, Tweed, & Spade” reflects on the history of African American labor in the region. His poem is displayed at the Pioneer Square pergola, highlighting the significance of this area in Seattle’s past.
Another poet, Jourdan Imani Keith, has written a poem inspired by the Duwamish River, highlighting the environmental and social issues facing this important waterway.
Through Seattle Poetry in Place, residents and visitors alike are able to experience the city in a new and literary way. The project aims to create a deeper connection between people and place, fostering a sense of community and appreciation for the rich history and culture of Seattle.
