Seattle’s Department of Construction and Inspections recently proposed a new ordinance that would legalize co-living arrangements in the city. The proposed ordinance would allow for up to eight unrelated adults to live together in shared housing units, a significant increase from the current limit of five unrelated adults.
Under the proposed ordinance, co-living units would be required to provide a certain amount of common space per resident, as well as adhere to certain occupancy limits and other regulations. The goal of the ordinance is to provide more affordable housing options in Seattle, where rents have been steadily rising in recent years.
Supporters of the ordinance argue that co-living can help address the city’s housing affordability crisis by enabling residents to share costs and resources. However, critics have raised concerns about the potential for increased density and noise in neighborhoods where co-living units are located.
The proposal is currently open for public comment, and the Department of Construction and Inspections will be holding a series of community meetings to gather feedback on the ordinance. If approved, the new co-living regulations could go into effect as soon as next year.
