The paddle boarder Konnor Williford, 26, had a close encounter with a great white shark in the Gulf of Mexico near Crystal Beach. The dramatic encounter was caught on camera by a drone operator. Williford was seen standing on his board when the shark swam right underneath him.
The drone operator, Cody Wabiszewski, said he initially thought the shark was a dolphin, but quickly realized it was a great white shark after seeing its distinctive markings. The shark appeared to be between 6 and 8 feet long.
Williford managed to stay calm during the encounter and paddled back to shore safely. He said he has seen numerous sharks in the past while paddleboarding, but this was the closest encounter he had ever experienced.
Despite the scare, Williford said he will continue paddleboarding in the Gulf of Mexico, but will likely be more cautious in the future. Shark encounters are relatively rare in the Gulf of Mexico, but experts advise swimmers and surfers to always be aware of their surroundings and avoid swimming during dawn and dusk when sharks are most active.
