NASA’s downed Ingenuity helicopter has a last gift for humanity, but we’ll have to go to Mars to get it. NASA’s Perseverance rover is currently on Mars, and its mission is to explore the Jezero Crater in search of signs of ancient life. The rover carries with it a small, solar-powered helicopter named Ingenuity. Although Ingenuity is technically a test vehicle, its primary mission was to demonstrate the feasibility of powered flight in the thin Martian atmosphere.
On April 30, 2021, Ingenuity made history by completing the first powered, controlled flight on another planet. Since then, the helicopter has completed a total of 12 successful flights, far surpassing its initial goal of completing just a few short hops. However, on August 16, 2021, Ingenuity experienced a technical issue during its sixth flight, causing it to crash.
Despite this setback, Ingenuity is not done making a contribution to the mission. NASA announced that the helicopter’s final act will be to gather images and video of the Perseverance rover as it explores the Martian surface. This will provide valuable data for future missions and help scientists better understand the challenges of flying on Mars.
In order to retrieve this final gift from Ingenuity, the Perseverance rover will need to travel to the location where the helicopter crashed and capture images of its remains. This data will be transmitted back to Earth, where scientists and engineers will be able to study it and learn valuable lessons for future missions to Mars.
While Ingenuity’s final flight may have ended in a crash, its legacy will live on through the data it provides to help advance our understanding of Mars and pave the way for future exploration of the Red Planet.
