According to experts, a geomagnetic storm caused by solar flares is expected to create optimal conditions for the northern lights to be seen in the region. This rare natural phenomenon is caused by charged particles from the sun interacting with the Earth’s magnetic field.

Residents in the DC metro area are advised to find a dark spot away from city lights and look towards the northern horizon to have the best chance of catching a glimpse of the northern lights. The spectacle is expected to be visible starting around midnight and into the early morning hours.
